Summer Police Update

By: Morag Palmer, Lambeth South Cluster Inspector

Your Safer Neighbourhood teams are working hard for you here in South Lambeth. In a timely release after terrible events in France, Belgium and Orlando, Florida, a public information film has been launched called Stay Safe, providing advice in the event a serious incident happened here

The National Counter Terrorism Policing sets out practical steps to take to stay safe in the rare event of a firearms or weapons attack. The threat level in the UK is ‘SEVERE’ meaning an attack is highly likely. Police and security agencies work tirelessly to interdict attacks, but it is also important that community remains vigilant and aware of how to protect themselves if the need arises.

STAY SAFE sets out three key steps:
RUN, if you can. If you can’t run, HIDE and then, as soon as you can, TELL the police what’s happening so they can get help there quickly to stop the threat.

Importantly tell others of the threat so they don’t approach danger. This guidance can be applied to any place.

National Counter Terrorism Policing Lead Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said: “The intention of the film is not to unnecessarily scare the public but to ensure that they know what steps to take in the unlikely event of being involved in a firearms or weapons attack. We know that from case studies and real life testimony based on the experiences of people who have survived attacks that the advice given in the film has saved lives."
"With the threat level remaining at SEVERE, the police and security services continue to operate at a heightened state of readiness - we are working on hundreds of investigations and making an arrest everyday. However, it is only with ongoing support of communities that we can defeat terrorism - public are our eyes and ears and we need them to be alert, but not alarmed. We are asking everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or activity to the confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 on in an emergency, 999.”
