Jez Lowe at Croydon Folk Club Monday 15th April
Event date:
Monday, 15 April, 2019 - 20:15

Jez Lowe has long been one of the UK’s busiest and best folk performers, playing for huge audiences all over the world, either solo (with guitar, cittern and harmonica), or with his band 'The Bad Pennies'.

And as part of 'The Pitmen Poets' (with Bob Fox, Benny Graham and Billy Mitchell), Jez has helped to rekindle the fire in the tradition of mining songs and culture of his native North-East of England.

Scores of performers, ranging from Fairport Convention through Wizz Jones and The Unthanks to The Young 'Uns sing his songs.

Since 2006, Jez Lowe has contributed over 60 songs to the BBC Radio series 'The Radio Ballads'.

This project, winner of a Sony Radio Award (amongst others), culminated in a live broadcast on BBC Radio 2 in November 2018 to commemorate 'The Great War Centenary'.

It featured Jez alongside the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and narrator Michael Morpurgo.

His preference for narrative, his commitment to telling the stories of ordinary people and, above all, his consistency, make him an ideal contributor.

Jez writes sad songs, lyrical songs and funny songs. There’s not a bad one in an over-40-year career.

Several of the songs on his 2014 album 'The Ballad Beyond 'match anything in his repertoire.

"The best singer-songwriter to come out of the UK for a long time" Richard Thompson

"No-one else writes or sounds like Jez Lowe" Mike Harding
